Power Tip #2: The Secret Behind a Brash Move

Power Tips are daily brief pieces of advice. I do not remember the source of this tip, but I have used it countless times. I have seen its effectiveness first hand.

Have you ever played a game that requires you to read other people?

These game are becoming more popular as they integrally combine the most intriguing element, the human being. This is self-evident in the newest craze, Texas Hold’em Poker. While many players rely on the probability of cards, the most successful rely more heavily on reading people’s minds. Here’s one tip that you should look out for, and it doesn’t end at the poker table.

Watch for a player who throws chips forcefully on the table or suddenly behaves in a brash or aggressive way. He may be masking his weak hand of cards. Keep in mind that most people do not make a huge scene. However, they may just emphasize the betting of chips just slightly more than usual. The point is that people are poor bluffers and tend to overcompensate when they try.

Realizing the Power of Constant Never Ending Improvement

I was originally thinking of some clever title along the lines of how you can change your life by visiting a Toyota factory or something to that tune. I couldn’t get it right without it sounding cheesy, so I’m bringing it up now.

It’s been recently well popularized that the secret to creating great companies and products is to constantly improve quality all the time. Japanese companies pioneered this idea after General McArthur brought Dr. Deming over because he couldn’t find a single working phone in war torn Japan. Deming’s idea was simply that you will succeed and reap profits by setting up a system that makes sure that there are constant never ending improvements in manufacturing the product. This idea resulted in a revolution in quality products witnessed by the success of Japanese brands in America.

If constantly improving quality brings companies success, can this same philosophy help us achieve personal success?

Power Profile #2: Mahatma Gandhi

Power Profiles showcase successful people who you can learn from. If there is any golden rule to follow, take advice from people who already there.

Mahatma Gandhi is a legend known around the world. Even for ignorant Americans like myself, Gandhi is near the top of the list of people who we would have at least been familiar with. Gandhi has single handedly influenced how the world is today with his amazing leadership and his philosophical ideals.

Gandhi was the major political and spiritual leader of India and the Indian independence movement. He started by fighting for civil rights for Indians living in South Africa. He then managed to get rid of the oppressive British control of India. Although there were other leaders, it was his message of satyagraha that finally led to freedom, which is the resistance of tyranny through mass civil disobedience. He then inspired movements for civil rights and freedom across the rest of the world.

He was an incredibly character. He committed to non-violence and truth in the most extreme conditions (more on this later). He was completely self-sufficient in which he made his own clothes and ate a simple vegetarian diet. He simply acted according to his principles, which is quite extraordinary especially if you see what he went through.

Introduction to NLP Part 1: The First Bite

I’m introducing to you something that most people do not know about. The ones who have are likely to be sales people or executives who have access to the latest and greatest in self-improvement. NLP was also much more publicly known back in the 1970s and 1980s. It has since not received media exposure. However, many known figures such as Anthony Robbins and other self help gurus use it or the ideas behind it extensively. It has been continuously developed for almost 40 years.

What is NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) all about?

It is a study of how to make someone excellent. It all started with the search for the ultimate question. How can you change someone to become a star performer in life? There has to be some way of breaking down the elements of successful people, and then use these elements to help others.

Look all around you. There are teachers who are far better than most of their counterparts. There are athletes who do not seem human and break records, which were once thought unbeatable. There are business managers who are consistently successful in motivating their employees and achieving financial success. There are absolutely amazing people on television who seem to have that “charisma”. They speak confidently in front of huge crowds. They create cult like followings (ex. Steve Jobs).

Most people think that these people have some type of gift given at birth.

The Global Shift of Power to Asia

Wake up. I don’t think you really feel what is going on. Sure, you probably have heard about this unless you’ve been living under a box. But do you feel it? That’s what is important. The world is going through mind numbing change. If you’re living in America and many other countries, you won’t see or feel it until it’s too late.

You need to feel it. Asia and India are going through so much change right now that it’s absolutely ridiculous. Words cannot express the magnitude. This is a time of massive change. Massive change means massive opportunity. Massive opportunity to make you rich. This is the time. Now, you just have to act.

Envision a world where the United States is no longer regarded as a super power. Envision a world where your competition for a job is 6 people from China, 7 from India, and you’re the only American. Envision a world where Chinese and Indian cultures are rampant around the world. Envision your future.

Fortunately, China and India are not there yet. They are experiencing rapid growth, but also the pains that are associated with it. Most Chinese and Indian citizens are just as fear ridden as most citizens anywhere in the world. Many do not see the opportunities that exist all around them. What does this mean? Opportunity for you.

When there is massive change, there is chaos. When there is chaos, people crave certainty.

Power Profile #1 - Bill Gates

This is the first Power Profile. These are designed to showcase successful people who you should know about and learn from. If there is any golden rule to follow, take advice from those who are where you want to be. This one is about Bill Gates, the most ambitious and enterprising man of our times. Enjoy.

This man does not need much introduction as he is pretty much known all over the world. I’m sure I could pick out a random poor kid in Africa, and he or she would know of him. Then again, he does send a lot of money there. To put things in perspective, most Asian people regard Bill Gates just as highly as their beloved religious leaders like Buddha. I wouldn’t be surprised if Harvard and Bill Gates are the two most popular words over there.

He is simply extraordinary. He started as a Harvard drop out and made it all the way to the top of the world in terms of wealth. I believe he got to $70 billion at one point. Keep in mind this is pocket change to the era of Carnegie and gang (excess of $150 billion in today’s value). Even though this is an enormous amount of wealth, he ushered the era of mass computing and became its figure head.

Mass computing has been the most radical change in human history by far. You can argue with me, but you’re wrong. Ok… let’s get some insight into his life.

This guy was SMART. He was raised in a well to do middle to high class family, so he had access to great resources. However, he had ambition, a whole bunch of it. By 17, he sold his first computer program, a time-tabling system for his high school for $4,200. That’s a lot of money back then. He scored 1590 on the SAT (not that it means everything) and told his university professors that he’d become a millionaire by the age of 30.

Power Tip #1 - Master the Art of Timing

This is the first Power Tip. These will be concise posts on very powerful ideas that can be understood and used right away. I will always reference the source of the tip if you are looking for more information. This tip is taken from Robert Greene’s The 48 Laws of Power. It’s an absolutely amazing book that explains the secrets of power with history and reason.

Time is one of those extremely powerful manifestations of the mind. It was created to make the world seem a little less eternal. It brings sense and comfort to our world. However, the commonality of time is only an illusion.

Although we have a common system of time, it’s not always as it seems. Time can go by very quickly or very slowly depending on the circumstances. As a child, we experience time that is long and slow while as an adult, the years seem to fly by. The stressed will have their time quickly taken from them. However, the relaxed will seemingly have all the time in the world. The key is that time has a significant relationship on what we think and do. Use this knowledge to your advantage. Here are some powerful advice on time:

1. Do not appear to be in a hurry as it shows a lack of control over yourself
2. Always appear to be patient like everything will work out for you

How to Pick Out Liars by their Hands

One of the most powerful ways to pick out a liar is with their hand gestures. Human beings absolutely love to lie and start doing so at a very early age. There is one hand gesture that actually slowly shifts as you grow, and it’s a powerful indicator to use to pick out a liar.

Children are incredibly honest. It is only as they grow older and more accustomed to society that they begin to start lying. Society tells us that certain behaviors are inappropriate. Some examples are stealing, sex, and plain rudeness. When the children gets older, the child starts the realize the benefits of telling the truth and of course… lies. When faced with the decision to either get punished or get away, the child will naturally attempt to get away. This usually involves lying.

The child subconsciously does a remarkable thing. He or she will take both hands and cover his or her mouth after lying. It is quite obvious to most parents. As the child grows older, the child is more aware of their own behaviors and starts to restrict bodily gestures. However, the subconscious force is quite powerful as you will see.

The same gesture will actually stay with the person throughout their life. However, the gesture is done in a slightly different way. For example, a teenager will place only one hand to the side of their mouth like they are scratching an itch there. Then, it slowly becomes what we commonly see everywhere.

Introduction to Body Language

Do you know who has the upper hand in this photo?

You probably have heard the phrase that words are only 10-25% of communication. The rest of communication are made up of non-verbal cues. If you haven’t heard this, you’re living in a dungeon.

I never ever rely on people’s words anymore. I must get a complete feel for their every move. I absorb their facial expressions. I observe their tone. I observe any bodily gestures.

If you don’t already do this, it will take time to get used to. I used to be a complete idiot because I relied on people’s words. When I think about it, I’ve been lied to so many times that should have been completely obvious to me. It was completely outrageous. After I consciously learned about body language, my mind started to pick up cues. I didn’t even have to read a book to get started. This is because we are born with an incredible amount of knowledge on human behavior.
