Eyes Never Lie - Power Tip #4
August 15, 2007 – 11:36 pm | by Carl Zetterlund
This tip can be found from most body language books. I specifically recommend The Definitive Book of Body Language by Allan and Barbara Pease.
When we see something we like, our pupils dilate to let more of the lovely sight reach our brains. You can’t control this reaction as it is involuntary.
In a famous psychology test, duplicate photographs of a woman’s face were shown to men. The men were asked which photograph they preferred. It turns out that more than 90 percent of the men selected the picture that had the pupils airbrushed to be slightly larger. The interesting part is that they asked the men if they could tell a difference between the photographs, and they couldn’t.
So what can the power of the pupil do for you? Well, you can use it to tell if a member of the opposite sex is attracted to you! If his or her eyes are dilating under normal conditions, she probably has a good amount of interest in you, so don’t hesitate to make a move!
Another example is in poker. There is a good reason why most professional gamblers wear dark glasses and a hat pulled low over their eye brows. Seeing great cards will make your pupils dilate.
So the next time you are out and about, think pupils because it is easy to forget! It will initially take effort to pay attention to them, but you’ll get the hang of it. Just don’t end up looking like a stalker.
Like I always say, body language is always evaluated in context. For example, don’t draw a lot of conclusions if you are in a dark room. Pupils still do contract and dilate for light.

P.S. This is just one of many useful tips using body language. To find out more, I recommend an amazing book called The Definitive Book of Body Language by Allan and Barbara Pease. Alan Pease is by far the leader in teaching body language and has written one of the most insightful books I’ve ever had the pleasure of reading.
